What do I look for to spot nursing home abuse or neglect?

There are basically two forms of nursing home malpractice: nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect. Abuse is generally the result of a deliberate act by a staff member. This can include physical violence, verbal abuse, or financial wrongdoing. Signs include injuries, overmedication, and withdrawn behavior. Nursing home neglect results from inadequate care. Watch out for bed sores, under medicating, wandering, malnutrition, dehydration, and unsanitary conditions.
